Veterans and hospital care
Counseling at the Babylon Vet Center in West Babylon, tied to the VA medical center in Northport, serving veterans who have been in combat and their families. Hospital social work at the Northport VA, including psychosocial assessment, individual and family therapy, therapeutic groups for post-traumatic stress and substance use, and screening for residential community programs.
Schools and student services
School social work in a New York school district, including individual and group counseling with students, psychosocial histories for the Committee on Special Education, parent groups, and support to teachers and administrators. Later, as Coordinator of Student Services, directing a district-wide student support program, recruiting and training mentors, advising the Deputy Superintendent, and chairing a district Parent University.
Family, foster care, and young parents
Counseling and workshop programs for families, with particular focus on parenting, foster care, and young and expectant parents. Marital and relationship workshops for couples and for congregations. Support for foster, kinship, and adoptive families navigating agencies and schools.
Early childhood and quality assurance
Head Start experience covering both direct service and quality assurance, including reviewing records for compliance with federal and state regulations, directing programming for children with special needs, and developing conferences and workshops for educators and directors.
County and community services
Coordinating a county Persons In Need of Supervision program, evaluating contracted mental health providers, acting as liaison with other county agencies, and maintaining communication between the agency and families. Consultation to schools, churches, and community agencies continues today.
Teaching and supervision
Assistant Clinical Professor at Stony Brook University's School of Social Welfare, teaching and monitoring the progress of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and MSW students. Field placement supervision of social work interns in hospital and school settings, and coordination of graduate interns from Stony Brook, Adelphi, Hunter, and Fordham.
